The 8+1 Keys
of Belonging

You do not need to do all of these at once. Start with one or two. Build from there. Each key makes the others stronger.

Trust grows when people see you regularly. Use people's names. Keep small promises. Be the person others can count on.

Do This:

  • Be visible in shared spaces every week.
  • Mission: Say hello to 5 people.
  • Mission: Get 5 people to know your name.
  • Meet 5 new neighbours each week — in the hallway or by knocking on doors.
  • Say: "Hi, I'm [name]. I help connect neighbours."
The Science: 50 hours of contact = acquaintance. 200 hours = close friend. Showing up is how those hours happen. (Hall, 2018)

Pro Tip

A person's name is the sweetest sound in any language. Use it.
